About the course

The Bachelor of Geographical and Spatial Science has a focus on understanding the environmental processes including climate and hydrology that interact with landscapes, people and drive economies, including broader geography principles, demography and regional development.

This hands-on degree will involve significant learning in the field, laboratory activities, acquisition of advanced spatial data, and fundamental problem-solving skills to understand and recommend solutions to environmental issues. Key outcomes include the ability to demonstrate broad and coherent theoretical and technical knowledge of core geographical concepts to understand human and physical environments and apply well-developed cognitive, creative and communication skills in diverse contexts.

Upon completion you will develop strong Geographic Information Systems (GIS), advanced remote sensing and spatial analysis skills that are under high demand by employers.

Commerce has always been my passion, so I decided to major in Accounting and Finance at the UWA Business School. After spending time working on my grades, pursuing worthwhile activities, editing my resume and networking with industry professionals, I received an internship at Westcourt Chartered Accountants. This provided me with the chance to apply what I learned from books to real-life practical work, and lets me stand out from the crowd. My recommendation to all students, international or otherwise, is this: don't be scared by what you perceive to be your limitations. Seize the initiative and make the changes you need to in order to live your life how you want to.

It was a steep learning curve and it was challenging and intense, but also incredibly rewarding. From the first day I was given meaningful work and was trusted with a great level of accountability. This role gave me what I've grown to appreciate as being the two most important factors in success: confidence and resilience. I left that job three years ago and joined BHPBilliton in the Iron Ore division, and this is where I am today, in a manager role supporting the Asset President and Iron Ore Leadership Teams.

I chose to study Psychology because it seemed like the perfect combination of art and science. I always loved humanities subjects but I also enjoyed science subjects. This, combined with the fact psychology would lead me to a career in helping people, made psychology the perfect fit for me.

I chose UWA because of the opportunity to explore the things that interested me outside my chosen study path. Through my broadening and elective units I was able to explore areas of study like anthropology, human biology, linguistics, marketing and pharmacy, and I was able to have such a broad and enriching education.

Begin your pathway to becoming a psychologist by selecting the Psychology extended major, available in the Bachelor of Psychology, OR the Psychological and Behavioural Sciences single major in the Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts. To continue your pathway to registration as a provisional psychologist, follow this with a fourth year of study with Honours in Psychology. You can then undertake further postgraduate study in your chosen area of psychology to complete the studies required as part of registration.
