This course equips you with the knowledge, skills, and experience to graduate ready for the classroom, and for the profession. Develop your knowledge and understanding of how children learn and the implications for teaching and how to create safe, inclusive, engaging and supportive learning environments, combined with hands-on learning as you spend over 100 days of professional placement in primary schools, starting from your first semester.

This distinctive undergraduate teaching degree prepares you to be a teacher from Pre-primary to Year 6 and gives you the skills and knowledge to be classroom and profession-ready.

Make a real difference to young children's lives and equip them with the skills, knowledge and values needed to succeed in the world, now and in the future. This distinctive undergraduate teaching degree prepares you to be a teacher from Pre-primary to Year 6 and gives you the skills and knowledge to be profession-ready.

You'll develop in-depth knowledge of the primary curriculum, be exposed to a range of teaching strategies, and undertake professional placements supervised by a practising teacher. You'll also be taught by inspiring and innovative lecturers, be given experiences in schools across a diverse range of settings, and will develop your knowledge, confidence and skills through both classroom and experience-based learning. You'll be required to pass the National Literacy and Numeracy Test (LANTITE) as well as a Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA).

Course structure

In your first three years, you will complete units that familiarise you with all of the learning areas of the primary school curriculum, as well as developmental and learning theory that enables you to design effective learning programs. You will also gain essential knowledge and understandings about inclusive education and how to design learning programs for primary children from diverse backgrounds.

You will learn about Indigenous histories and perspectives and how to incorporate Indigenous perspectives into your curriculum planning. You will have opportunities to learn about and apply a range of digital tools to support your learning and that of the children you will teach. You will have the opportunity to choose an area of specialisation that will add value to your primary qualification. In your final semester, you will complete an honours project that will be linked to your specialisation and which can be completed as either a formal dissertation or an action research project.

Commonwealth Teaching Scholarships
Applications are strongly encouraged from high-achieving school leavers, First Nations peoples, people for whom English is an additional language or dialect, people with disability, people from regional, rural or remote locations, mid-career professionals or people from low socio-economic backgrounds.

Scholarships of up to $40,000 per student are available for students studying full time in undergraduate initial teacher education (ITE).

The scholarship can help with the cost of study as well as provide opportunities to teach in government schools or government-run early learning settings for a period of time after graduating.
