Commerce has always been my passion, so I decided to major in Accounting and Finance at the UWA Business School. After spending time working on my grades, pursuing worthwhile activities, editing my resume and networking with industry professionals, I received an internship at Westcourt Chartered Accountants. This provided me with the chance to apply what I learned from books to real-life practical work, and lets me stand out from the crowd. My recommendation to all students, international or otherwise, is this: don't be scared by what you perceive to be your limitations. Seize the initiative and make the changes you need to in order to live your life how you want to.

It was a steep learning curve and it was challenging and intense, but also incredibly rewarding. From the first day I was given meaningful work and was trusted with a great level of accountability. This role gave me what I've grown to appreciate as being the two most important factors in success: confidence and resilience. I left that job three years ago and joined BHPBilliton in the Iron Ore division, and this is where I am today, in a manager role supporting the Asset President and Iron Ore Leadership Teams.

I chose to study Psychology because it seemed like the perfect combination of art and science. I always loved humanities subjects but I also enjoyed science subjects. This, combined with the fact psychology would lead me to a career in helping people, made psychology the perfect fit for me.

I chose UWA because of the opportunity to explore the things that interested me outside my chosen study path. Through my broadening and elective units I was able to explore areas of study like anthropology, human biology, linguistics, marketing and pharmacy, and I was able to have such a broad and enriching education.

Begin your pathway to becoming a psychologist by selecting the Psychology extended major, available in the Bachelor of Psychology, OR the Psychological and Behavioural Sciences single major in the Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts. To continue your pathway to registration as a provisional psychologist, follow this with a fourth year of study with Honours in Psychology. To me, the BPhil is the key that unlocks the best that UWA has to offer. You can obtain an undergraduate degree by presenting your work at international conferences, interning for the Chinese government and publishing independent research in a peer-reviewed academic journal. It has all the existing benefits of a degree at UWA, with additional experiences that are rare for students to encounter at undergraduate level.

If I had remained in Canada, I would not have been able to find a university program that took a comparable interest in the academic, professional and social development of its students.

When browsing the UWA Handbook, I knew almost immediately that I'd apply for the Bachelor of Philosophy (Hons). Given that it provides distinctive opportunities to research and network in UWA and beyond, I had no reason not to. The BPhil's early exposure to research work prior to honours can open up further research opportunities.

At the end of my third year, I was accepted as a research intern at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST). This was made possible partly because I'd already done some undergraduate-level research and my supervisor, who also had contacts at OIST, recommended that I apply.

Doing the BPhil made my application for the 2017 Rhodes Scholarship for Malaysia all the more competitive, especially on the academic side, and so I will be going from the BPhil experience at UWA to the Rhodes experience at the University of Oxford-from one exceptional experience to the next.

The BPhil will help you make the most out of undergraduate study. It enriches the typical undergraduate experience with access to people, opportunities and resources to deepen and further your academic and professional development in UWA and elsewhere. While it's still up to you to take those opportunities, the BPhil will give you plenty of them.

UWA's four-year undergraduate Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) degree comprises 32 units.

The units you study must include:

  • a degree-specific major
  • at least four units which satisfy the broadening requirements of your course (including GCRL1000 Global Challenges, Research and Leadership and a Language Other Than English [LOTE] unit)
  • an honours program the equivalent of eight Level 4 or 5 units (including a dissertation equal to four Level 4 units)
  • a research placement in your second or third year (GCRL2000)
  • an approved period of student exchange/study abroad

There are some limits to be aware of. You'll need to:

  • include no more than 12 units at Level 1
  • pass at least three units at Level 3
  • maintain a weighted average mark (WAM) of 75 or above

Beyond this, you can craft a degree that suits your personal interests and career goals.

The Dr Vincent Harry Cooper Memorial Prize

The Dr Vincent Harry Cooper Memorial Prize is awarded annually to the BPhil (Hons) student who submits the most outstanding Honours dissertation. The Selection Committee chooses the prize winner with the highest mark achieved for their dissertation from each of the following areas of study:

  • Biological and Medical Sciences, and Biotechnology
  • Engineering, Mathematics and Informatics
  • Humanities and Creative Arts
  • Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences
  • Social, Behavioural and Economic Sciences

Dissertations are judged on novelty of idea or approach; creativity and clarity; and the impact in the relevant field. This prestigious prize was established by Mr Roderick Cooper in honour of his father, Dr Vincent Harry Cooper. Dr Vincent Harry Cooper was a foundation Board Member and Chairman of the Western Australian Faculty of the Royal College of General Practitioners.
