Entry requirements for domestic students

Applicants are required to demonstrate a capacity to carry out independent research, and applicants for a Doctoral Degree are required to meet University academic and English language entry standards. Applicants are required to demonstrate a capacity to carry out independent research and have adequate training and ability to pursue the proposed research course. Generally, this may be a Master's Degree or Bachelor's Degree with first or upper second class honours. See Section 3.2.1 of the HDR Admission Policy (https://policies.curtin.edu.au/findapolicy/index.cfm) for detailed information. Any specific course entry and completion requirements must also be met. All Curtin courses have compulsory and other core capabilities that are essential for demonstrating the achievement of course learning outcomes and graduation. Students who are unable to meet or demonstrate those requirements, now or in later stages during their studies, may seek reasonable adjustments from the University wherever possible to facilitate alternative ways of achieving those requirements. If reasonable adjustments cannot be accommodated, Curtin will discuss study options to find an alternative course of study or an exit degree.

  1. Applicants who will transition to the proposed course after completion of the GIA Certificate in Applied Corporate Governance (100-credit course) have to meet the admission criteria of GIA outlined below (extracted from GIA Admissions Guidelines).
  2. Applicants require a relevant bachelor degree or higher degree from an Australian University or an equivalent qualification from an approved higher education provider in Australia (as defined by Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA)) or recognised overseas university or higher education provider. Curtin students should refer to the Course Structure Note to identify relevant undergraduate degrees. Applicants external to Curtin will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
  3. Professional memberships and professional experience alone do not qualify as degree equivalent for entry into a postgraduate course.

Masters (Coursework)

This major is designed for those who wish to teach years 7-12, specialising in one or two curriculum areas such as English, Mathematics, or Science. It is part of the Master of Teaching program.

Entry Requirements

Admission criteria

You must have a bachelor degree or equivalent from a recognised institution with studies relevant to the curriculum areas offered at Curtin. Specifically, a major teaching area equivalent to a total of three-quarters of a year of successful EFTSL, comprising of sequential discipline study. This equates to six units, with no more than two at first-year level and no fewer than two units at third-year level. Applicants wishing to qualify with a minor teaching area must also have equivalent to a total of half a year of successful EFTSL, comprising of sequential discipline study. This equates to four units, with no more than two at first-year level. Applicants may be eligible for entry based on previous studies in a major teaching area only.

Applicants will also be required to engage in assessment of non-academic attributes in order to reflect on their suitability for teaching. Students will be responsible for meeting any costs associated with this assessment process.

You also need to meet a minimum standard of English Language Proficiency, as you are required to teach others in English during your professional experience placements.

Entry to this course will not be possible based on work experience alone. This is consistent with current practice for courses in the School of Education. This course is not suitable for qualified Secondary teachers wishing to change their subject specialisation.

Other requirements and notes for this course

This can be a physically and mentally challenging course. Please familiarise yourself with the Inherent requirements | Study (curtin.edu.au) before applying. Reasonable adjustments can be made for students with disability.

Some lectures in this course may be attended by both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Working with Children Clearances and Certifications

Students will be required to have a current and valid Working with Children clearance as required by the state or country in which the placement provider is located. They will also need to meet any other relevant State requirements before engaging in any work with children or professional experience. If students have any doubt about their eligibility to acquire these clearances they should contact the local Teacher Registration Authority.

LANTITE

Students are also required to provide evidence of successful completion of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education students (LANTITE) prior to graduation. The test is managed by ACER and details of the test (for example, sample questions, the Test Window dates, and registration) can be found at: https://teacheredtest.acer.edu.au/. Students are responsible for meeting the costs associated with taking these tests, which are a national requirement applicable to all teaching graduates.

Professional experience placements

All students are required to successfully complete compulsory professional experience placements in schools as part of designated units throughout the course. Professional experience placements must be undertaken in a registered school where the language of instruction is English.

Placements are undertaken on a full-time basis for the number of days shown in a continuous block and students need to plan carefully to ensure they are able to meet this commitment. The total number of days of professional experience in the course will satisfy all states' requirements for teacher registration. No more than 25% of professional experience days may be undertaken in schools outside Australia. Therefore, students will only be able to complete one 3 week placement outside Australia and will be required to complete all other placements within Australia.

None of the four professional experience placements can be broken or split into shorter periods.
