I have been a Registered Nurse for almost 30 years. In 2017 I moved from Kalgoorlie to Busselton with 2 school-aged children and had a part-time position as a Hospital Coordinator. This inspired me to study health industry management; I have 1 unit to complete for this Grad Cert and then I plan to study towards a degree in Public Health, which I think is a fascinating and important area in health.
When I began studying, it was a struggle to work, study and be a mother (even one unit at a time) but it has been a great experience so far and what I have learnt has been beneficial to my career and life in general. I received a high distinction in my last unit - Health Planning and Evaluation and this has provided even more of an incentive for me to continue to study.
I hope that my Graduate Certificate in Health Industry Management will help me to gain a permanent position in management in the South West. My passion is public Health as this was one of the most rewarding jobs I have ever had (in the Goldfields). It was diverse and interesting and I worked with an incredible team during some very demanding times, including major disease outbreaks.
Once I have obtained a degree in Public Health, my aim would be to obtain a position in this area. Public Health is an area that has so much potential in a variety of health areas.
With an increasingly ageing population as well as increasingly complex health conditions, knowledge in the area of Public Health will play an important role in a health industry where "prevention is better than cure" and is also going to be a cost-effective way of ensuring a financially sustainable health industry.
