"We are going to start using computers to keep a record of patient data because this will help us easily keep track of the patient's medical history", said the Medical Director of Nkhoma Mission Hospital.
My interest in information systems developed while I was an intern medical assistant who was learning how to diagnose and treat outpatient cases. Keeping track of patient information was difficult when the patient had lost his or her health passport. The hospital introduced the use of an information system to help patients and health care providers because the information was available and accurate, easily accessible and easily updatable format.
Nelson Mandela said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." I had a certificate in Clinical Medicine and was working as an intern in 2009 at Nkhoma Mission Hospital and I wanted more. I finished my internship in February 2010 and it was in October that very same year that I applied for and got selected to pursue a BSc in Management Information Systems at The Polytechnic (University of Malawi).
The program I studied at the Polytechnic enables me to have a very good understanding of management information systems. It also enables me to have a good understanding of some aspects of financial, cost and management accounting.
I am currently working as an Information and Communication Technology Technician at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources where maintain computer hardware and software and make sure it is up to date at all times. I previously worked as an Area Sponsorship Analyst at World Vision International where I managed data in the SingleStep Database. Prior to that, I worked as an Information and Technology Officer at Airtel Malawi, June 2016 to August 2016, where I provided support to Airtel staff pertaining to the information technology problems they encountered.
Before that, I was an intern in the Information and Computing Technology section at Malawi Investment and Trade Centre and partly in the Finance section from January 2016 to June 2016. I was also an intern at Telekom Networks Malawi in the Information and Customer Services department from April 2014 to June 2014 and I have also worked as a research assistant for some companies since 2013.
I want to study management information systems because I believe that record-keeping, data manipulation and communication is vital for any organization. It is important to have records that can be easily accessible when the need arises like in accounting transactions. Besides this, the information recorded can be used as a means of communication.
I am passionate about software development and databases and my dream is to be able to help different development sectors of the nation to store, retrieve information by developing management information systems for them. I believe that through obtaining and MSc. in Management Information Systems I can be able to achieve my dream.
