Environmental Engineering and Environmental Biology and Ecology Double Degree Major combines engineering principles with biological sciences to address environmental challenges. Students gain expertise in areas such as water management, waste treatment, and biodiversity conservation, preparing them for research and problem-solving roles in environmental science and engineering.
Environmental Engineering offers an opportunity for students to learn the application of basic science and technology to protect people from adverse environmental impacts, improve environmental quality and conserve natural resources. It involves the design of water supply management, wastewater treatment, solid waste management, air pollution control and land remediation. Environmental engineering practice requires a strong background in engineering mathematics, chemistry, fluid mechanics and environmental science. In addition, the students learn geotechnical principles, process principles, energy management and life-cycle assessment to develop solutions for environmental engineering problems. In the final year, the environmental engineering students build their research skills in the research project and employ their problem-solving skills with the design projects. Alongside, students in this double degree take a science major in Environmental Biology and Ecology. Environmental scientists, biologists and ecologists are central to understanding environmental and ecosystem functions and processes and solving issues such as land degradation, challenges related to urban and regional development, impacts of mining, oil and gas extraction and processing, biodiversity loss, and pollution. The core units in this major provide expertise in zoology, botany, ecology, genetics, and the biological aspects of environmental management, conservation and sustainability, along with opportunities to develop skills in experimental design, statistics, critical thinking and communication necessary for undertaking environmental research.
