Many machine learning models (e.g. deep neural networks and tree boosting machines) are used as block-boxes. Although those models can achieve high accuracy in many real-world problems, the interpretability limits the applicability of those machine learning models to high-risk applications (e.g., healthcare and  finance). To allow machine learning to be used in more applications, understanding the predictive models is crucial. Understanding the machine learning models also assists model debugging to achieve higher quality models. This project aims to research on explainable/interpretable AI which attempts to understand how machine learning and deep learning models behave.

Two PhD scholarships are available to work on a project that focuses on the mathematical theory of phase transitions, in view of classical and nonlocal equations. New cases of interest, such as the ones arising for long-range interactions, degenerate potentials and nonlinear energies, will be taken into account.

This program aims to advance the understanding and effects of the dynamic wave generated while swimming and how swimmers can better optimise he use of this wave. Previous research using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models and initial testing has shown a good correlation for this effect, but the methods to measure this more accurately and assess across multiple swimmers and techniques is required. The approach will be to develop a means of using live testing methods, for example using active tow devices, velocity measurement devices and Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) in combination with video recording to enable measurement and live feedback of the inter-cyclical accelerations. The research will run in parallel to similar research streams occurring at the Queensland Academy of Sport and Australian Swimming.

This scholarship is part of an Australian Research Council (ARC) funded project: The African Diaspora and Pentecostalism in Australia. This project investigates the new African Diaspora in Australia and its embrace of Pentecostalism, particularly after arrival. The project aims: to understand the range of challenges African-Australian communities faces; to determine why so many of their members join Pentecostal churches; to investigate how Pentecostal churches support these communities' translocal and transnational mobility and sense of belonging, and; to contribute to policy efforts to improve outcomes for African new arrivals in Australia.Within this larger project, the PhD candidate will conduct ethnographic research with Pentecostal churches in Australia, and with African Diasporas in the country and be based in Perth, at the School of Social Sciences, University of Western Australia (UWA).
