About this course

This course will qualify you as a primary school teacher (Foundation/Pre-primary to Year 6) with a comprehensive understanding of childhood development and learning. You'll focus on the interface between play-based learning and intentional teaching, with a special emphasis on the skills children need in developing literacy and numeracy, and be introduced to the breadth of learning required of children including science, the humanities and social science, the arts, and health and physical education. There will be opportunities to practise your teaching skills in authentic settings throughout the course and in professional practice placements.

(a) a bachelor's degree, or an equivalent qualification, as recognised by UWA;
and
(b) the equivalent of a UWA weighted average mark of at least 60 per cent;
and
(c) at least one year of the bachelor's degree relevant to one or more learning areas in the Primary school curriculum;
(2) Before admission, international students must obtain a criminal record check from their country of origin or recent residence.

2. Applicants who have a bachelor's degree in education, or an equivalent qualification, as recognised by UWA, are not eligible for admission.

3. Applicants with qualifications from institutions where English is not the medium of instruction must provide evidence of English language competence, with applicants presenting with IELTS Academic requiring an overall score of at least 7.5, with no sub-score less than 7.0, and no less than 8.0 in speaking and listening. Applicants presenting with Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) require an overall grade of B or above, with a score of 'exceptional' for listening and speaking, and at least 'good' for reading and writing.

4. Applicants with qualifications gained wholly in English from countries other than Australia, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States of America must provide evidence of English language competence in accordance with the requirements of the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia.

5. An English bridging course is not regarded as evidence of English language competence.

6. International students must obtain a criminal record check from their country of origin or recent residence.

7. Students are required to demonstrate literacy skills and numeracy competency within the top 30 per cent of the population, as required for professional registration.

8. A Criminal Record Check and a Working with Children Check must be presented to the Faculty before students undertake a professional practice unit.

At least two years full-time equivalent study at tertiary level in one of the following countries:

  • United States of America
  • Canada (except Quebec)
  • South Africa, where studies are taught and assessed in English.

OR

  • A valid IELTS Academic overall score of at least 7.5, a minimum score of 7.0 in the Reading and Writing bands, and a minimum score of 8.0 in the Listening and Speaking bands.
