Description
This course is aims to provide participants new to the triage role with an understanding of the guidelines and recommendations for the triage of patients in the emergency department (ED) using the Australian Triage Scale (ATS). The course will involve discussion of ATS categories, performance indicators, and how to apply the ATS to scenarios including taking a relevant history, performing relevant observations, identifying red flags, and developing clinical reasoning skills within this specific role. Scenarios include common ED presentations and special population considerations including obstetrics, paediatrics, geriatrics, mental health, sepsis, trauma. Medico-legal and communication issues associated with the role will be explored and strategies for maintaining a safe waiting room will be discussed. Online course scenarios will utilise case based, desktop discussion and face-to-face courses will have the opportunity for participants to go through scenario-based role playing for a low fidelity, simulated experience.
The course consists of approximately eight hours of online pre-course activities and a 16-hour workshop over two days for a total of 24 CPD hours. The pre-course activities are required for this course. The workshop runs over two days to allow for more in-depth, supported learning experiences for participants. Pre-course activity access, online meeting or face to face location details will be emailed to participants approximately two weeks prior to the course date. Pre-course activity access will be deactivated 14 days post course date and must be completed within this time to claim CPD hours.
