Broaden your laboratory skills with this qualification. This course will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to work as a technical assistant, technician or instrument operator. You will learn about quality control, performance of instrumental and non-instrumental tests, standardisation and the use of solutions. This course will teach you how to carry out experiments, take measurements, use scientific equipment, record results and present them for critical analysis. You will also learn about occupational health and safety (OHS) and safe laboratory practices both in the field and in the laboratory. After completing this course, you have the opportunity to continue your studies by enrolling in the MSL50122 Diploma of Laboratory Technology.

Please note:

Students enrolled at North Metropolitan TAFE with Australian Year 10 equivalent will need to enrol into the MSL30122 Certificate III in Laboratory Skills for six months prior to starting MSL40122 Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques for another six months. The total duration will be one year.

Students with the Australian Year 11 equivalent schooling can enrol direct into the MSL40122 Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques for 12 months at North Metropolitan TAFE.

Entry requirements

  • An IELTS score (academic) of 6.0 with no band score less than 5.0 or equivalent.
  • Equivalent to Australian Year 11.
  • OR Completion of MSL30122 Certificate III in Laboratory Skills is required for entry into this course.

Credit for prior study or work

Students who enrol into this qualification will be eligible for credit transfer of the units that they have already achieved. Fees paid by international students are set on a commercial basis and are paid as a whole of course fee - no refund will apply to credit transfers.
