Course structure

Course Structure

The Master of Creative Industries is broken up into three distinct stages, each designed to develop different skills.

  • Stage 1: Graduate Certificate in Creative Industries
    • Credit points: 10 This Unit operates as a combination of supervised studio time, and peer and mentor feedback sessions. Your mentor will be an expert in their field and possess industry experience.
    • Credit points: 10 This unit introduces the concept of creative practice research, including developing an understanding of the creative research paradigm, methodology and methods, and the production of knowledge in and through practice. Learning takes place through rapid creative ideation, discussion, academic writing including the production of a literature review, and the skills to find and critically engage with authoritative sources.
    • Credit points: 10 This Unit will introduce students to the fundamental principles and processes of leadership and entrepreneurship. It will introduce the foundations of business and leadership in a way that is relevant to emerging entrepreneurs and those pursuing positions of responsibility within the creative industries. It will explore leadership styles and their context, from self-leadership to servant leadership, from transactional leadership, to transformational leadership and what these leadership styles mean for developing a business. Entrepreneurial resources and terminologies will be covered so that students can plan their first steps and strategies as an entrepreneur in the creative industries.
  • Stage 2: Graduate Diploma of Creative Industries
    • Credit points: 10 The aim of Graduate Studio 2, is to explore personally experimental creation. In order for creative projects to be interesting to audiences and the creatives who make them, they need to have a difference. Differences come from the unique and the individual. This studio is about exploring the edges of your comfort zone as a creative, to discover what new viewpoints, art forms, and processes you can include in your creative practice. Ultimately you'll be developing habits that enable to keep stretching in your practice.
    • Credit points: 10 Drawing on a range of creative media texts and analytical frameworks, this unit will engage with critical concepts and perspectives that influence the production and consumption of creative media, in a contemporary global context. Through critical inquiry, you will discover how creative media generates meaning and how interpretations of meaning can be articulated from various social and cultural perspectives. You will discover how these perspectives define your personal response to creative work. You will develop the skills to be able to apply an understanding of contextual parameters to support your own creative media practice. You will gain a professional perspective on a range of digital tools and collaborative media platforms. These tools and platforms will assist you with the critical consumption and dissemination of information and equip you with the skills needed to make a meaningful contribution to participatory culture.
  • Stage 3: Master of Creative Industries
    • Credit points: 20 This unit facilitates the ideation, theoretical framing, methodological design and production scheduling of the Graduate Studio Project. Students will apply core principles of creative ideation, design and planning acquired in CIM400/401, and draw upon theoretical and methodological knowledge gained in CIM402 and CIM417 to develop a theoretical framework and artistic and/or practice-based research methodology.
    • Credit points: 10 Around the world, the dynamics of globalisation have caused implications for media policy, impacting on financial flow and funding structures, and thereby the Arts, entertainment and information industries. This has given rise changing distribution practice, media consumption and representation across all demographics. To be an effective international creative producer, being cognisant of the governing socio-political economies and treaties that determine society's cultural perspectives, is vital in nurturing success in the global landscape.
    • Credit points: 40 The Capstone Project for the MCI program is undertaken in CIM515 and CIM516. In CIM515, you will complete the research design, including a review of relevant literature and choice of research methods, and in CIM516, you will execute and complete the submission of the project. Through these units you will develop and refine your creative expertise, practical skills and theoretical knowledge in your chosen field of creative practice through the production of a piece of creative practice research. Your Capstone Project requires that you draw on the knowledge accumulated during your MCI, to produce an insightful and original piece of creative practice research that makes a contribution to your field.
