This qualification reflects the role of an enrolled nurse working under supervision of a registered nurse. This qualification covers the application of skills and knowledge required to provide nursing care for people across all areas of the health sector. Enrolled Nurses can work in all areas of hospital-based care, primary health care settings, aged care facilities, operating theatres, community nursing sector, mental health, and a broad range of other settings. You will have gained considerable skills and knowledge in the clinical environment, and around critical thinking, understanding of research and evidence-based care, which are essential skills moving into the nursing sector.

A graduate from a Diploma of Nursing program approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) is able to apply for registration with the NMBA as an enrolled nurse.

This qualification is also a gateway to a bachelor course in nursing. Students can possibly enter directly into the second year of a three-year degree, and work as an EN whilst completing the bachelor.

Course structure

To receive this qualification, you must complete 25 units - 20 core and 5 electives. Students attend college 20 hours per week.

The course is conducted in 8 terms, each comprising 10 weeks, inclusive of holidays. The course requires 400 hours (10 weeks) of mandatory Placement Experience, in four separate blocks. Fieldwork Placements are a requirement of the AHPRA registration process. We find these placements for you, as they are fully supervised, and require several competencies to be achieved at each placement.
